The Baron Ugo by Monteraponi is a robust and important red wine, born from a single vineyard and aged for 36 months in oak barrels. A ‘Super Tuscan’ from the Chianti area. Most people equate the term “super-Tuscan” with wines made at least in part from Cabernet Sauvignon or other international varieties blended with Tuscany’s native Sangiovese, but in this case as with other well known wines, it is only a nickname. Baron Ugo is made in the heart of Chianti Classico, in Radda in Chianti and is comprised of 90% Sangiovese with the traditional Chianti blending grapes Colorino and Canaiolo making up the rest. It was aged in large botti of French and Slavonian oak (mostly used) for 36 months, followed by three more months in concrete vats and 6 months in bottle before release. Made in the old style artisanal methods from certified organic vineyards.
“Underbrush, wild red berry, new leather and rose aromas are front and center on this fragrant, focused red. Radiant and savory, the taut, chiseled palate delivers juicy red cherry, crushed strawberry, star anise and white pepper alongside firm refined tannins. Hint of blood orange. Loaded with finesse and tension, it's youthfully austere at this stage and shows fantastic aging potential. Drink 2022–2041.” – Kerin O'Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (97 Points)
