Fine Disregard Wine Co. 2018 Pato Vineyard Mataro, Contra Costa County, California
Available: Only 12 left in stock$34.99
Mike Schieffer and Kara Maraden comprise the team of Fine Disregard, a micro-production "side gig," if you will, of two incredibly talented wine minds in California. Mike is the assistant winemaker at Turley, where he's had his say in their award-winning wines since 2013. Kara is a master viticulturist (fancy name for wine farmer), working hand-in-glove with the finest sites in California for over a decade, from Regusci, Clos du Val, Foley and more.
Mataro, known more commonly as Mourvèdre, is an ancient Mediterranean grape that thrives in hot, dry climates. Fine Disregard is one of a lucky few to source this Mataro from the Pato Vineyard, planted by European settlers over a century ago, still persisting today with its ridiculously-old vine plantings dating back to 1896, a stunning and rare feat. Only a handful of lucky recipients have access to the minuscule fruit of these gnarly, bush-trained stumps of centenarian vines: Ridge, Bedrock, and a select few others.
Plush, unbelievably layered and complex, the wine offers up brambly black fruit, plum, spice cake, flinty smoke, and dense berry fruits with tannins that seem to grumble, turning silky smooth and chocolatey with air. Bottled history, this is an amazing, limited, and powerful red.
