Red 2 – 2022 Schaefer Frohlich Blanc de Noir Trocken, Nahe, Germany – Pinot Noir RosĂ© from Germany, who knew?  This delicious treat is loaded with flavors of red fruit, tart cherries, citrus skin, and wet rocks. Tim Fröhlich is undoubtedly one of the stars of the Nahe. 100% free-run juice from 40-50 year-old Pinot Noir vines planted in the steep, volcanic-rock strewn Stromberg vineyard. This wine is so pale in color, it appears like rose-tinted water. Floral, with notes of white roses and strawberries; refreshing acidity with surprising texture for such a lightly colored wine.Tim considers this traditional style of wine a Blanc de Noir rather than a rose. The color certainly backs up his claim as it’s more onion skin in appearance than pink. The Pinot Noir grapes come from Stromberg– a very steep vineyard full of volcanic rock and planted with 40+ year old Spätburgunder vines. Tim seeks “maximum elegance;” and achieves this by using only free run juice and no skin contact. Direct press. Made like a white wine. Some steel and some halbstĂĽck (600 liter barrels). The texture, acidity and minerality belie the light color. Limited.
Pair it with – All appetizers, soft to medium firm chesses, oysters, cured meats. A very versatile rose!
Drink or Hold: Definitely serve it chilled or at cellar temp. Serve at 50-58°F.
White 1 – 2023 Willems Willems Riesling Fineherb, Konz-Oberemmel, Saar Valley Germany – This wine comes from vines up to 55 years old in a vineyard in Oberemmel that is bordered by a wall and, thus, was originally called “Auf der Mauer” (On the Wall). But according to the Willems-Willems website, another winemaker already had that name patented, so they simply renamed it “Auf er Lauer” (On the Lookout) and “with a grin, added a fox to its label.” The elegant, delicately fruity nose of the 2023 Saar Riesling Feinherb Oberemmel “Auf der Lauer” is extremely delicate and slate-scented, promising ripe, juicy fruit as well as a serious slate expression. Round and extremely juicy for a Kabinett, this is a full-bodied but still delicate, elegant and stimulating Riesling with well-balanced fruit and acidity. The finish is long and quite complex, supported by a mineral structure and texture. This is an exciting and thoroughly complex Kabinett with expression and style. It is still youthful but already very seductive. 11.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. 93 Points Wine Advocate.

Red 1 – 2019 Begali Lorenzo Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Monte a Bianca, San Pietro in Cariano, Veneto, Italy – This wine is made from the drying of grapes left to rest after an initial careful selection in the fields of the best, ripest bunches, with few berries. This is followed by a second selection in the drying room to check their integrity, ripeness, and health. The grapes remain here for an appropriate period until pressing. Sometimes wine doesn’t need to be complicated to be great. This one brings the goods straight up: plump black fruits cruise through tobacco and fresh earth while cocoa and cinnamon add warmth. Red 2 – 2022 Begali Lorenzo Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore, San Pietro in Cariano, Cengia, Italy – A blend of the indigenous varieties corvina and corvinone with a small percentage of other local grapes. The vines, located around the municipality of Cengia in a mountainous area, are cultivated with respect for the environment. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they are carefully selected, destemmed, and crushed. The vinification process employs the ripasso technique, where the wine is fermented on the spent lees of amarone during the racking phase. This method enhances the aromatic complexity and structural depth beyond that of a standard Valpolicella. Subsequently, the wine matures in oak barrels for 12 months, followed by a further maturation period in the bottle, preparing it for commercialization.
